DJ Five just emailed me this collage:
It’s a FreshJive advert that appeared in URB Magazine years ago. This jpeg recently surfaced on Facebook, and has since made the rounds. Interestingly enough, I had just unearthed that issue to scan it myself.
Rick Klotz, founder and owner of FreshJive, is an interesting dude. I first became aware of him when his line became available at Rip City Skates in Santa Monica, which was my stomping grounds in the late 1980s. and the FreshJive gear I sported while attending Sk8 Camp at the Visalia YMCA was a big hit among the other skateboarders who spent the summer of 1989 in the San Joaquin Valley.
In 1991, I attended a FreshJive party at La Casa in Downtown LA; there was a mini-ramp and I remember being bummed that I had worn my Doc Martins, as it impeded my performance.
In the mid-1990s, I was introduced to Rick Klotz through some mutual friends and would bump into him throughout the years, maybe in a Hollywood haunt like North (sometimes with Dov Charney in tow) and most recently at Bread & Butter in Spain.
Around the turn of the century, Rick Klotz had a slew of Hollywood fixtures come through his home to be photographed; The result was the collage above. At random sampling, I see ORLANDO AGUILEN, my man JAMAL, DJ AM, POET NAME LIFE, etc.
And you can find Yours Truly in row 7, third from the left.
How many featured players can you name?
Big up to Rick Klotz, pioneer of street fashion, a force to be reckoned with.
